The Mediterranean Sea is first considered from the point of view of geography as the area of encounter of languages belonging to different spread zones in Nichols (1992: 16-20) terms, which happen(ed) to collide at different times without resorting to a state of equilibrium (Dixon 1997). On this background the typological configuration of the languages of the Mediterranean in a global and in a local perspective is discussed on the basis of a selection of relevant syntactic features drawn from the WALS (2005, 2011). Particular attention is devoted to the syntax of negative sentences in a functional approach and to the role of contact in the diffusion of particular features (Willis/Lucas/Breitbarth 2013).
