Berber is a branch of the Afro-Asiatic phylum. Berber languages are spoken across a large area of Africa, from the Mediterranean to Burkina Faso, and from the Atlantic to the oasis of Siwa in Egypt.
The course will survey many aspects of Berber linguistics, starting from historical and sociolinguistic background, and including writing systems. The main part of the training will be devoted to the study of individual languages/dialects, covering phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and information structure. Transcribed texts as well as annotated spoken corpora will be used as materials.
