The place of morphology varies dramatically across languages. There are some where it is extensive and complex and others where it has little role. This is particularly challenging for typologists. I shall therefore take a canonical approach, setting up scales along which we find interesting variation. The focus will be on inflection. The aim is for us all to get a sense of the range of phenomena to be aware of, whether in languages of the Mediterranean or more generally, and an awareness of ways of analyzing them. The issues are difficult, and so questions and objections will be very welcome.
